FiOS

Fios cable FiOS is a relatively new technology offered by Verizon. It is a Fiber-To-The-Premises (FTTP) technology, which means all transmissions travel over a fiber-optic network all the way to the consumer home or business. To-date Verizon is the only company providing FTTP on a large scale. Other companies, such as the recently merged AT&T provide a similar service, called U-verse, over Fiber-To-The-Node (or Neighborhood), (FTTN), and in some cases over FTTP.

Fiber technologies like Verizon’s FiOS are allowing the traditional phone companies to compete with cable companies by offering the rapidly growing “triple play” package of services. Triple play refers to internet, phone, and video (tv) services all offered by one company. In the past, triple play offerings often came from multiple companies over multiple connections, i.e. Verizon’s bundling of DirecTV service where FiOS is not available. Now with technologies like FiOS, triple play services can literally all be provided over a single fiber connection.
