Today Verizon announced that 20/20 (20Mbps Down/20Mbps Up) internet service will soon be available to FiOS customers for as little as $64.99 per month. In addition to this new symmetrical package, the other offerings have been revised as follows:
Availability and pricing will vary by area. This service is available immediately in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The remaining states with a FiOS footprint will get similar symmetrical service soon. Users on dslreports.com have already reported switching to the symmetrical tier and confirmed the 20/20 upload/download speeds.
Verizon also announced they will begin switching from BPON technology to GPON later this year. BPON currently limits the 1310 nm wavelength to 155 Mbps Upstream and the 1490 nm wavelength to 622 MBps downstream for voice, data, and IP video. GPON will increase the technology bandwidth limit on the fiber to 1.2 Gbps upstream and 2.4 GBps downstream. Can you image the possibilities?
This announcement was officially made by Verizon via a webcast at 2 PM on 10/23/2007. The webcast was hosted by Susan Retta, Vice President of Broadband Solutions, and Paul Tassinari, Vice President of Network Engineering. http://www.verizonwebcasts.com/2020/
